Aside from holding the soil down (which any plant can do), Grass is nothing more than a display of conspicuous consumption. An old way of showing that property owners have time or money to spend on maintaining so much land, weather by doing it themselves or affording to have others do it for them. A display of power and control. A way of applying order to chaos, while the order of nature is entirely against such mono-crops.
